ThisInternationalStandardissuitablefordeterminingthedensityofmobiletransparentliquids.Itcanalsobeusedforviscousliquidsbycarryingoutthedeterminationsattemperaturesaboveambientusingasuitableliquidbathfortemperaturecontrol.Itcanalsobeusedforopaqueliquidsbyreadingthehydrometerscalewherethetopofthemeniscusmeetsthestemofthehydrometerandapplyingacorrectionfromtable1(see11.2). Sincehydrometersarecalibratedtoreadcorrectlyatthespecifiedtemperature,scalereadingsmadeatothertemperaturesareonlyhydrometerreadingsandnotvaluesofdensityattheseothertemperatures. NOTES 1Theaccuracyofthedensity,determinedbytheproceduresgiveninthisInternationalStandard,forvolatileand/orwaxycrudeoilscontainingfreeand/orsuspendedwaterandsedimentscanbelessthaninferredfromtheprecisiondataquotedinclause13.Thisisduetothepossiblelossoflightcomponentsduringsamplemixing.However,samplemixingisnecessarytoensurethatthetestportiontransferredtothehydrometercylinderisasrepresentativeaspossibleofthebulksample.Techniquesaregiveninclause7whicharedesignedtominimizesuchlossoflightcomponent. 2Valuesofdensityat15℃canbeconvertedusingstandardmeasurementtablestoequivalentvaluesofAPIgravityorrelativedensitysothatmeasurementsmaybemadeintheunitsoflocalconvenience.
